About this Route

The Ride the Giant Motorcycle Route starts at Thunder Bay’s Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina. This route brings riders around the city, along the Trans Canada highway, and down the Sibley Peninsula. Along the way, you will witness stunning landscapes and incredible views of and within the iconic Sleeping Giant. Your last stop ends at the historic Silver Islet General Store, the perfect place to grab a light lunch, homemade baking, and to take in the Lake Superior views from the Silver Islet Harbour.

Plan to have some food at Silver Islet General Store. If you are looking for a larger meal, there are many excellent restaurants in Thunder Bay’s waterfront district.

Ride Highlights

Ride Start: Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina

Start your Ride the Giant route at Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina. Here you can soak in the view of the Sleeping Giant and see where your ride will be taking you. The marina is part of a mixed-use development that features parkland, trails, public art, and events. It is close to the historic downtown core and many attractions and landmarks of Thunder Bay.

Suggested Stop: Thunder Bay Tourist Pagoda

Directly upon leaving the marina, the Thunder Bay Tourist Pagoda is a stop you might want to consider. This is Canada’s oldest continuously operating tourist bureau, dating back to 1909. It is a great place to find out more information about the Thunder Bay region.

Motorcyle – Terry Fox (15)

Suggested Stop: Terry Fox Monument and Lookout

This stop is one that shouldn’t be missed on your way. Located above Highway 11/17, the Terry Fox Monument and Lookout offers another perspective of the Sleeping Giant. The 9-foot-tall bronze statue beautifully commemorates Terry Fox and his cross-country Marathon of Hope.

Point on Interest: Highway 587

Take a right turn off Highway 11/17 onto Highway 587, and you will quickly find out why this route is one that riders really enjoy. The long winding road down the Sibley Peninsula, the lush Northern Ontario wilderness, and wild life make it interesting and fun. Keep an eye out for deer!

Suggested Stop: Thunder Bay Lookout

While riding through Sleeping Giant Provincial Park you should consider checking out the Thunder Bay lookout. A left turn off highway 587 will lead you on a 9.2 km (5.7 mile) gravel road to this incredible scenic lookout. From this lookout, you can see the city of Thunder Bay from the perspective of the Sleeping Giant.

Suggested Stop: Sea Lion

Consider a stop at the Sea Lion for a quick break from the ride. The 500-meter trail to this unique rock formation is moderately easy, with some uneven terrain. Once there, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the iconic stone formation resembling a sea lion, a perfect spot to relax and snap a photo.

Point on Interest: Silver Islet

Riders will then head down to Silver Islet, a charming historic mining village on Lake Superior. Known for its scenic beauty and rich history, the area offers a glimpse into its silver mining past. Soak in the picturesque views of this hidden gem.

Suggested Stop: Silver Islet General Store

No visit to Silver Islet is complete without stopping at the historic Silver Islet General Store. This spot is perfect for motorcyclists to unwind and enjoy a snack or coffee while soaking in the quaint atmosphere. The store is brimming with local history and unique goods. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs and learn about the town’s mining history.

Silver Islet is the end of this road, and after taking in all the sites here, you will turn around the way you came.
