A Deep-Rooted Nordic Tradition

In Thunder Bay, winter doesn’t slow things down; it’s when many locals feel most at home. Snow-capped spruce trees, crisp air, and quiet trails are part of everyday life here, and cross-country skiing has long been woven into the fabric of the community’s identity. Thanks in large part to Thunder Bay’s strong Finnish heritage, Nordic skiing isn’t just a pastime; it’s a tradition passed down through generations. I was taught to ski by my mom at the age of six on the trails here. I remember seeing an elderly Finnish skier scooting by us, remarking “Kiitos” (Thank you”) as we stepped off the single track to let him pass. Clearly fit and enjoying the trails, I remember envying his sleek, smooth movements and thinking that his frosted eyelashes and moustache made him look like a happy, real-life snowman. I’ve never been able to run up hills on my skis as he did, but I still get out on the trails every season to enjoy the meditative experience that comes with the cold and rhythm of the sport. There’s nothing like it.

Finnish immigrants brought their love of skiing to Thunder Bay with them in the late 1800s, finding the landscape around Lake Superior perfectly suited for it. But it wasn’t just a pastime then. Having your skis was a necessity for getting around in the long, snowy winters. Whether you were going to visit a neighbour down the road or heading into town for supplies, many Finns traveled on their skis. Even famed author Margaret Atwood, although not a Finn, remarked in her autobiography that while living in rural Ontario, her skis were always kept in her car trunk in case she broke down. She had to use them on more than one occasion.

Over time, the necessity evolved into a passion. Thunder Bay has produced world-class cross-country skiers who first clipped into skis as youths on local trails, learning technique, endurance, and grit right here at Lappe Ski Centre and Kamview Nordic Centre.

Thunder Bay trails have something for everyone. Whether you’re a teen looking for a fun winter outing with friends, a senior in search of a low-impact workout, or a parent exploring a new way to get your children to put those devices down and get outside. Cross-country skiing in Thunder Bay delivers in every season of life.

A Winter Activity for Every Age and Ability

One of the greatest strengths of cross-country skiing is how accessible it is. It’s easy to learn, gentle on the body, and endlessly adaptable. You can take it slow and enjoy the scenery or push yourself with hills and distance.

For families, it’s an ideal winter activity. Kids, lovingly known as “Jack Rabbits” in skiing circles, can start young on shorter, flatter trails, building confidence while burning off energy outdoors. Parents appreciate that it’s affordable and something everyone can do together. Many locals, like me, fondly remember skiing behind a parent, motivated by the steaming hot chocolate waiting to be enjoyed at the chalet.

For adults young and old, cross-country skiing offers something rare: a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like work. It strengthens the heart and lungs, builds balance and coordination, and works both the upper and lower body, all with minimal impact on joints. Being outside in winter sunlight also does wonders for mental health, helping combat the winter blues and keeping spirits high through the colder months.

Whether your goal is recreation, fitness, or simply getting outside more often, Thunder Bay’s Nordic ski centres make it easy to get started.

Lappe Ski Centre

Lappe Nordic Ski Centre – Thunder Bay (2)

Lappe Ski Centre was established in 1978 by the Puiras family, who continue to run the facility philanthropically. Located just north of the city, it is one of Canada’s premier cross-country ski destinations. Known nationally for its role in developing elite athletes, Lappe also shines as a place for everyday skiers.

The trail network offers an impressive variety of terrain, with both skate and classic opportunities. Beginners will appreciate the wide, gently rolling trails that allow plenty of room to find balance and rhythm. Intermediate skiers can explore longer loops with gradual climbs and descents. Advanced skiers can challenge themselves on a 14 km expert trail, testing the skills and endurance of even the most technical athlete.

Lappe includes dedicated areas for new skiers, including children, and a supportive atmosphere where learning is encouraged. If you don’t have your own equipment, rentals are available on-site, making it easy to try the sport without a big upfront investment. Approximately half of the centre property has outdoor lighting, allowing skiers to enjoy many of the trails into the evening.

Visitors can choose between a day pass or a seasonal membership. A day pass is perfect if you’re visiting Thunder Bay or just want to test the trails, while a membership offers excellent value for anyone planning to ski here regularly throughout the winter. Many families opt for memberships, turning skiing into a weekly ritual.

Lappe’s unique facility features a sauna (a Finnish tradition) and wax rooms, in addition to changerooms and an eating area.

Kamview Nordic Centre

Kamview Nordic Centre

Located just minutes south of the city, Kamview Nordic Centre is a favourite for its convenience, variety, and welcoming vibe. With classic and skate trails that wind through scenic forested terrain, Kamview feels like a winter escape without the long drive. I find the proximity to Loch Lomond Ski Area convenient. My husband and I drop off our teenagers, who prefer downhill, and within minutes, we are clicking into our skis at Kamview.

The trail system caters beautifully to all skill levels. Beginners can stick to the easy flatter loops, like the “Meadow” (2.7 km) or the “Tamarack” (3.2 km). Intermediates will find the moderate trails like the “Jack Rabbit” (3.8 km) or “Sun Up-Sundown” (4.3 km) enjoyable, while advanced skiers will love “The Lookout,” a 6.8 km black diamond challenge with steeper ascents and descents. Kamview has 5.5 km of lit trail, making it convenient for busy members to still get out after dinner and enjoy a night ski.

Dogs aren’t allowed at many cross-country ski facilities. But at Kamview, your off-leash furry friend is welcome to join you on the 3.2 km Dudley’s Trail!

After a run on the trails, head inside their chalet and enjoy a hot drink or snack. Kamview’s canteen is famous for its giant cookies!

Rental equipment is available, and lessons and programs help newcomers feel comfortable quickly. As with Lappe, skiers can choose between purchasing a day pass or investing in a seasonal membership.

Embrace the Season: Ski Thunder Bay

Cross Country Skiing Thunder Bay

Cross-country skiing is often called one of the best winter sports for overall health, and for good reason. It’s low impact, reducing strain on hips, knees, and ankles, yet highly effective at improving cardiovascular fitness. Skiing engages nearly every muscle group, promotes balance, and builds endurance in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

Just as important are the mental health benefits. Gliding quietly through snow-covered trees, breathing in fresh winter air, and soaking up natural light can be deeply restorative. In Thunder Bay, where winter is long and the days are short, skiing offers a way to stay active and connected throughout the season.

Perhaps most special of all is the sense of community. When you ski at Lappe or Kamview, you’re sharing trails with Olympians-in-the-making, weekend warriors, and families creating their own winter traditions. It’s a reminder that in Thunder Bay, winter isn’t something to endure; it’s something to celebrate.

Whether you’re clicking into skis for the first time or returning to a lifelong passion, Thunder Bay’s cross-country ski community is ready to welcome you.
