About the Community of Kakabeka Falls

Kakabeka Falls is a charming community located in the municipality of Oliver Paipoonge, Ontario, just 30 km (18.6 mi) west of Thunder Bay. It’s home to the stunning Kakabeka Falls, often nicknamed “the Niagara of the North” due to its impressive 40 metre (131 ft) high cascade, which is the second highest waterfall in Ontario.

The village itself is small, with a population of about 100, and it exudes a quaint, rural atmosphere that’s perfect for a peaceful getaway. The Kaministiquia River, which flows through the village and over the falls, played a significant role in Canadian history as a route for the Voyageurs, French fur traders in the 17th century. The falls have a rich cultural history, with the Ojibwe name “Kakabeka,” meaning “waterfall over a cliff,” and a legend of the Princess Green Mantle, who sacrificed herself to save her people from an imminent attack. Visitors to the park can learn about this legend and the historical significance of the area. With its natural beauty, historical importance, and welcoming community, Kakabeka Falls is a must-visit destination for those looking to explore Ontario’s natural wonders and cultural heritage.
