Silver Islet history

Silver Islet’s history is rooted in the discovery of a rich silver vein in 1868. Mining operations on the small islet in Lake Superior continued for several years until early 1884, when the pumps holding back the lake’s waters failed, flooding the mine shafts and halting production. The submerged shafts remain under the water, and on clear, calm days, remnants of the mine can still be seen from the lake, providing a fascinating reminder of the area’s industrial past.
