About Shabaqua Trail

Shabaqua Trail is a 45 kilometre (28 mile) multi-use trail that forms part of the Trans Canada Trail network in Northwestern Ontario. The eastern trailhead is located west of Kakabeka Falls along Highway 590, with the route continuing west to the community of Shabaqua. The trail is signed, open, and travels through a mix of forested landscapes, old logging roads, and newly developed trail sections, offering a quiet backcountry experience close to Thunder Bay.

Shabaqua Trail is well suited for hiking, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing, with potential for bikepacking for more experienced users. GPS downloads, maps, and route details are available through NWORTA and AllTrails to assist with trip planning. This trail represents an important first phase in a larger vision to create future trail connections toward Quetico Provincial Park and Atikokan, helping to build a long-distance trail network across the region.
