About Mdaabii Miikna Trail

The Mdaabii Miikna Trail, meaning “go to the shore trail” in Anishinaabemowin, is a 24-kilometer (15-mile) loop within Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario. This trail offers hikers a challenging backcountry experience, serving as a shorter alternative to the park’s Coastal Hiking Trail.

The route begins near Playter Harbour and follows the Coastal Hiking Trail before branching off into the forest. Hikers will encounter diverse terrains, including deep mud pits, driftwood balance beams suspended over the bay, and horizontal wall climbs. The trail is predominantly forested, with limited landscape views. However, when the water horizon becomes visible, it offers a rewarding perspective of Lake Superior’s coastline.

Wildlife sightings are common along the trail. Hikers may observe grouse, various bird species, mice, rabbits, and mink. The trail is accessible from May through October, providing ample opportunity to experience the park’s natural beauty.

For those planning a hike, it’s essential to be prepared for the trail’s challenging conditions. Proper footwear is necessary due to uneven and muddy terrain. Additionally, hikers should be self-sufficient, as the trail is remote and lacks facilities. It’s advisable to check current trail conditions and weather forecasts before setting out.
