About Southern Headland Trail

The Southern Headland Trail, a 2.2-kilometer (1.3-mile) loop within Pukaskwa National Park, offers hikers a moderate challenge with rewarding views of Lake Superior. The trailhead is conveniently located near the park’s Visitor Centre, making it an accessible option for those seeking a shorter hike.

As hikers traverse the trail, they will encounter a variety of terrains, including natural surfaces with built stairs, loose rocks, and tree roots. The path winds through forested areas, leading to high promontories that provide panoramic vistas of Hattie Cove, Pulpwood Harbour, and Horseshoe Bay. These elevated viewpoints offer excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.

Along the route, visitors may observe local wildlife such as grouse, various bird species, mice, rabbits, and mink. The trail’s design encourages reflection and learning, offering a deeper understanding of the Anishinaabe culture and traditions.

The Southern Headland Trail is well-marked and maintained, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Before setting out, it’s recommended to check current trail conditions, as weather can affect accessibility.
