About Paul Kane Trail

The Paul Kane Trail, situated within Quetico Provincial Park near Atikokan, Ontario, offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. This 1.8 km (1.1 mi) round-trip trail is generally considered easy, taking approximately 20 minutes to walk.

The trail follows the historic French Voyageurs Fur Trade route from the 17th century and an earlier Anishinaabe portage, highlighting its deep-rooted cultural importance. The journey culminates at a serene spot where artist Paul Kane immortalized “The French Rapids” in his artwork. In 2008-2009, archaeological excavations at the site confirmed its historical accuracy, revealing artifacts such as ceramic fragments, glass trade beads, and a well-preserved wooden stake, all dating to the early 19th century.

The trail is open year-round, inviting campers, hikers, and snowshoers to explore its scenic path. Recent enhancements include a new boardwalk, improving accessibility and preserving the site’s integrity.

For those interested in a longer hike, the Historic French Portage Trail extends 4.8 miles (7.7 km) round-trip, offering a moderately challenging route that also traces the historic fur trade path.
