About Sea Lion Trail

The Sea Lion Trail, nestled within the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park beckons hikers to explore its tranquil beauty. To reach the Sea Lion, park at the Kabeyun Trailhead parking lot and follow the trail. Climb over some downed trees, and soon you’ll arrive at the green-fenced-off area. Suddenly, the trees part, revealing the Sea Lion—a rock formation perched on the shoreline, gazing out toward Lake Superior. Once, it resembled a lion sitting on its haunches, hence the name. Although the lion’s head has fallen, the legend lives on. The softer sedimentary rock continues to erode, and one day, the “arch” of the sea lion may collapse, leaving a stack in the lake.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park features over 100 km (62 mi) of well-maintained trails, ranging from easy, family-friendly walks to challenging routes for experienced adventurers. Hikers can explore a variety of landscapes, including dense forests, rugged cliffs, serene lakeshores, and the iconic Sleeping Giant formation itself. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to spot deer, foxes, birds, and even the occasional moose. Many trails lead to panoramic viewpoints, providing breathtaking vistas of Lake Superior and the surrounding wilderness.
