About Top of the Giant Trail

The Top of the Giant Trail, within Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, offers a unique all-day hiking experience. This challenging trail ascends the “knees” of the Sleeping Giant, an impressive formation of volcanic rock rising above beautiful Lake Superior. The vistas from the top encompass the water, the park’s boreal forest, and a deep natural gorge. With a length of 21.8 km (13.5 mi) , including a steep uphill climb, this trail is akin to a rite of passage for Ontario hikers. From the green-fenced-off area at the end, you’ll witness breathtaking views of Lake Superior and perhaps catch a glimpse of the Isle Royale. Proper trip planning and navigational skills are essential for conquering this rewarding adventure.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park features over 100 km (62 mi) of well-maintained trails, ranging from easy, family-friendly walks to challenging routes for experienced adventurers. Hikers can explore a variety of landscapes, including dense forests, rugged cliffs, serene lakeshores, and the iconic Sleeping Giant formation itself. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to spot deer, foxes, birds, and even the occasional moose.
