About Paddling Silver Islet

Silver Islet offers incredible paddling opportunities on Lake Superior. On a clear day, paddlers can observe the submerged shafts from an abandoned silver mine. This is also a launching point to explore the coastal waters of the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. The most popular destination from here being the Sea Lion, a geological formation created by the power of Lake Superior. Silver Islet is also the westerly gateway to the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. The more advanced may wish to paddle almost 13 km to explore Porphyry Island.  Paddlers can launch from Silver Islet harbour’s public harbour for a small fee, note that there is limited parking available.

During the summer months, Parks Canada offers a guided voyageur canoe experience, “Silver & Stone” from the Silver Islet Harbour, which must be booked 48 hours in advance. Guided kayaking adventures can also be booked in advance with private outfitters. Although there is no camping available at Silver Islet itself, Lake Mary Louise Campground at the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is just a 10-minute drive away. Fresh baking, ice cream and gifts are available at the Silver Islet General Store which is adjacent to the public launch.

Interesting Facts

-In 1868, the Montreal Mining Company discovered a vein of pure silver on this small island.

-At this time, the island was only 50 metres-squared (540 sq ft) and just 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) above the water level.

-In 1870 the island was developed to be 10 times its original size, and a small town was built to support the mine.
