Wabakimi Provincial Park is a three-hour drive on paved roads from Thunder Bay, via highways 17 and 527. It is one of Ontario’s largest provincial parks, and one of the most rugged, with more than 500 backcountry campsites and over 2,000 km (1,200 miles) of lake and river paddle routes. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including eagles and Woodland caribou.
The easiest way to access the park is via Little Caribou Lake, which is a 10 km (6 mile) drive from the community of Armstrong. It’s recommended to contact an outfitter to provide a shuttle service and to store your vehicle while you explore the park. You can also book accommodations at a fly-in lodge or resort and enjoy guided paddling and other adventures without having to worry about the details!
Another “drive to” access point is a 40 km (25 mile) drive east of Armstrong, to the Pikitigushi River. This will provide connections to the eastern area of the park.
-Wabakimi is the second largest provincial park in Ontario and is home to some 10,000 lakes.
-Many of the portages in the park have evolved from routes that have been used by Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years.
-The park is a great place for birders, with sightings of numerous species including the Hawk Owl, Great Grey Owl, and Pine Grosbeak.
