Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park’s main attraction is the majestic, awe-inspiring waterfalls, which plunge 40 meters (131 feet) over Precambrian cliffs into the Kaministiquia River below. In winter, the falls freeze, and the massive icy cascade is an amazing sight to see. Established in 1955, the park covers 5 square kms (1.9 square miles) and served as a historic route for the Voyageurs. Just a 30-minute drive from Thunder Bay, this all-season park features two loop trails perfect for snowshoeing. The Mountain Portage Trail is the most popular. It’s an easy loop with wonderful views of the river, as well as the falls and gorge.

For those who like a challenge, the longer Little Falls Trail is accessed via the Mountain Portage Trail, and features a steep descent into the portage area, and a 30 m/100 ft ascent coming out of the portage. Winter users will have plenty of opportunities to view a variety of wildlife, including lynx, deer, rabbits, moose and many species of birds. The park also offers over 15 km (9.3 miles) of groomed cross-country ski trails.
