Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is a 244-square-km (94 sq mile) park located on the Sibley Peninsula east of Thunder Bay. This natural wonder offers breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. Winter visitors can snowshoe the many hiking trails in the park. With 100 km (62 m) of trails to choose from, the ones with the best terrain and the most popular for snowshoeing are the Sea Lion, Sawyer Bay, and the Kabeyun Trail to Tee Harbour. These trails vary in length roundtrip from the parking lot, between 2.4km/1.5 miles to 12.4 km/7.7 miles. They wind through snow covered boreal forest, revealing spectacular geological features such as the iconic ‘Sea Lion’. Wildlife that has been spotted on the trails from time to time include deer, wolves, foxes, lynx, and seemingly endless species of birds.
If you and your party are interested in more than a day trip, the park features full-service, heated cabins for year-round rental. Sleeping Giant is also home to the best cross-country skiing in Ontario, with 50 km (31 miles) of groomed skate and classic trails. If you have skates, you might want to bring those too! The park features a 300 m/0.19-mile skating trail that allows users to glide through the serene forest, around what is normally a busy campsite in the summer months.
