Superior Country Seeking Nipigon MAT Committee Members

The Municipal Accommodations Tax (MAT) is a fee imposed on accommodation rentals fewer than 30 days. The MAT is paid by the customer and applies to stays at hotels, motels, lodges, inns, bed and breakfasts, or other lodging, including those sold online. The Township of Nipigon has passed a by-law to implement the MAT whereby accommodation rentals within the Township must commence collection of a 4% MAT from its customers as of October 1st, 2024. The dollars collected will be remitted quarterly to the Township and be divided 50/50 between the Township and an arms-length, non-profit tourism entity.

Superior Country, the region’s non-profit Destination Marketing Organization, has been selected by the Township to be the eligible arms-length recipient of 50% of the MAT dollars collected. As such, Superior Country is currently seeking volunteers to join its Nipigon Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) Committee. The committee will function as an independent decision-making body, working with support from Superior Country tourism experts to consider, evaluate, and render decisions with respect to the Nipigon MAT Fund. The objective of the Nipigon MAT Committee is to enhance the town’s tourism economy by making decisions that work toward achieving the following goals:

  • Increasing visitation to the Township of Nipigon.
  • Improving Nipigon’s overall appeal as a tourist destination.
  • Extend the length of visitor stays.
  • Extend the economic yield per visitor.
  • Support new product development and capital projects.
  • Support a culture of service excellence within the tourism sector and the broader business community; and
  • Communicate the importance of the tourism industry as an economic and social driver within the Township of Nipigon.

Committee members shall serve a term of two years. To maintain the economic diversity of the committee, the voting membership will consist of up to eight members from the following sectors:

  • Two (2) members representing the hotel and accommodation sector.
  • One (1) member representing the culinary sector.
  • One (1) member representing the retail sector.
  • One (1) member representing the arts and culture sector.
  • One (1) member representing the sports sector.
  • One (1) Nipigon community member.
  • One (1) member representing Superior North CFDC.
