Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine is located just east of Thunder Bay, off Highway 11/17. An open pit mine, it was established decades ago by Gunnard Noyes. Noyes began prospecting and mining in the 1960’s, and established the amethyst mine in the 1970’s. When he passed away in 1988, his son Doug and granddaughter Carol operated and worked at the mine until 2007. At that time, the mine was closed to the public and then was re-opened in 2015 by Carol, who continues to operate it to the present day, alongside long-time employee Brandon.
The mine is open to the public, and the property features “dig your own” opportunities, as well as a gift shop. The shop sells raw amethyst, as well as gifts crafted from Thunder Bay area amethyst. The mine welcomes all visitors, including small, large and school group bookings. It is a family and pet friendly operation with amenities including Wi-fi, ample parking, and an RV/trailer turnaround.
Visitors of all ages will delight in searching for and finding their own piece of amethyst. The mine supplies the tools, pails and trowels, for amateur miners. They also supply bags and paper for packaging once you’ve found what you are looking for! If you want to bring your own tools, they also allow small hammers. All visiting amethyst miners must wear safety glasses, which are provided. If “dig your own” isn’t your thing, browse the gift shop and pick up a polished piece in the form of jewellery, crystals, home décor, and any other variety of gifts and crafts.
