The community of Nipigon is the perfect place for a Superior Picnic Adventure. This town with the “natural edge” is the headquarters for the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, and is home to the Paddle to the Sea Park & Splash Pad, as well as the Nipigon Historical Museum. Delicious food and local handmade Indigenous arts and crafts can be found on Lake Helen Reserve, just across the Nipigon River Bridge on scenic Highway 11. The Bridgeview Lookout is located on Railway St. overlooking Lake Superior’s Nipigon Bay.
Choose from two accessible, sheltered picnic areas, one at each end of the lookout. This is a stop on the Group of Seven Touring Route, so make sure to check out the intepretive panel! There is also a map of the area, ample parking, and a washroom facility.
Take the 4 km Portage Loop urban walking trail. Begin at Bridgeview Lookout, walk towards the bridge on the pedestrian pathway. Follow the path under the bridge, and up the ramp. Stay to the right, following the dirt road along the riverside. Follow the old rail line to the Nipigon Lagoon/Marina. Take the stairs up to Riverview St. and turn right to head downtown. Turn right on Front St. Cross the tracks and walk along the walking path along Railway St. back to the lookout. (see map panel at lookout)
Bike or hike in and out of this 4 km return section of the Nipigon River Recreation Trail. Head to the Nipigon Waterfront to the trailhead, turn around approximately 2 km in at the Rotary Club lookout on the causeway. Alternatively you can hike the entire 10 km trail to Red Rock, however it is not a loop so you must arrange for a ride back to your vehicle after the hike.
