The Battle Island Lighthouse stands as a beacon of maritime history. Established in 1871, it guided vessels through treacherous waters near Rossport. The lighthouse witnessed significant upgrades in 1914, including a new octagonal structure and a diaphone fog alarm. Its light, a triple-flash sequence with a 450-candlepower visibility, was a marvel of its time. The lighthouse’s keepers, like Charles McKay, braved isolation and harsh conditions for decades. Today, it’s a testament to the resilience of those who maintained the light, ensuring safe passage for countless sailors. While there is no charter that operates daily to the lighthouse, Sail Superior has been known to offer Zodiac rides to and from the island from time to time.
