Perched on the northwest tip of Otter Island, the Otter Island Lighthouse has been a steadfast guardian of Lake Superior’s remote shores since 1903. This 36-foot tall octagonal wooden tower, with its distinctive red iron lantern, was originally erected to guide mariners navigating the treacherous waters off Ontario’s coast. Despite its discontinuation in 1918 and subsequent replacement by an unwatched acetylene light, the lighthouse’s legacy endures. It stands about 100 yards from the island’s northern point, elevated on rock 70 feet above the lake, symbolizing over a century of maritime history. Once manned by keepers like Robert McMenemy, who tragically perished in service, the lighthouse now silently watches over Pukaskwa National Park’s rugged beauty.
