About Slate Islands Lighthouse

The Slate Islands are a group of islands 12 km away from Terrace Bay. They have two large islands, Patterson and Mortimer, five minor ones, and many islets. The Slate Islands Lighthouse is located on Patterson Island. Constructed in 1903, this octagonal wooden tower, with its distinctive red iron lantern, rises 36 feet above the ground. Perched atop a hill, it casts light 224 feet above lake level, originally visible for 10 miles. The lighthouse and keeper’s dwelling are integral to the Slate Islands Provincial Park, established in 1985 to protect the unique ecosystem, including a rare herd of woodland caribou. This serene location, free from light pollution, offers visitors a chance to witness the Northern Lights, adding to the lighthouse’s allure
