About Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse

Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse is an historic landmark that marks the entrance to the Thunder Bay Harbour on Lake Superior.  A lighthouse was first constructed by Canadian Pacific at this location in 1887. It was later demolished, and re-built in 1940. The lighthouse has a white and red square wooden tower with a lantern room on top. It is supported by steel beams on concrete pedestals and has steel shutters on the windows to protect it from storms. The lighthouse was originally called Port Arthur before being renamed Thunder Bay Central Entrance in 1970. Today, the lighthouse is a popular attraction for tourists and residents alike, who enjoy the scenic view of the lake and the Sleeping Giant. Sail Superior’s harbour sailing tour is a great way to see the lighthouse. On a calm day, it is also accessible to paddlers launching from Thunder Bay’s marina.
