About Welcome Island Lighthouse

Welcome Island Lighthouse is a historic landmark that has been guiding ships on Lake Superior since 1906. The lighthouse is located on the easternmost of the four Welcome Islands, about 10 kilometres offshore from the city of Thunder Bay. The original lighthouse was a wooden dwelling with an octagonal lantern, but it was replaced by a red square skeletal tower and two single story dwellings in 1959. The lighthouse also had a fog alarm building that sounded a group of two blasts every 70 seconds. The grounds are closed to the public, but the lighthouse can be seen by boat or from the air. Sail Superior offers zodiac rides to the Welcome Islands.
