About Thunder Bay Museum

The Thunder Bay Museum was established in 1908, and houses six galleries that showcase local, regional and national heritage. The first and third floors display their long-term exhibits that chronicle over 10,000 years of Thunder Bay and Northern Ontario history. Throughout the year, the museum hosts traveling exhibits and rotating displays.

Visitors can enjoy interactive displays and educational programing. The museum offers lectures and publications to help further engage visitors with the history of the region. An active member of the community, the museum oversees outreach programming, and lends displays to a number of locations including schools and businesses.

The museum is operated by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society.

Quick History

  • Thunder Bay’s Fort William Historical Park recreates the fort as it was in 1815, at the peak of its activity in the fur trade.
  • By the mid 19th century, the fur trade was replaced by mining as the area’s main industry.
  • The City of Thunder Bay was established in 1970 with the amalgamation of the cities of Port Arthur and Fort William.
