Nipigon is the headquarters of the Lake Superior NMCA and is the most northerly freshwater port in North America. With a deepwater channel all the way to the fully serviced marina, boaters are invited to cross the 49th parallel and receive their certificate commemorating the occasion. Wildlife sighted in the Nipigon marina area include otters, beavers, pelicans, bald eagles, and many species of water fowl. Points of interest on the Nipigon River include ancient Indigenous pictographs, located just down from the marina and across the river. The Nipigon River Bridge is also visible from the marina. Boating up river past the marina is recommended for those with strong knowledge of the waters. The depth of this part of the river changes often, and there are shallow shoals that can cause damage to boats.
Downtown Nipigon is a short 10 minute walk from the marina. Here, you’ll find attractions such as Paddle-to-the-Sea Park, the Nipigon Historical Museum and the Bridgeview Lookout Tower. Located within 1.5 km (just under 1 mile) of the marina is a grocery store, post office, bank, restaurants, cafes, shopping, and a fitness centre with shower facilites. The Nipigon River Recreational Trail is a 10 km hiking trail that runs between Nipigon and Red Rock. The trailhead is located at the Nipigon marina.
