Porphyry Island has a rich history and offers a number of experiences including a self-guided tour, a mini museum, art gallery, film theatre and wilderness hikes. Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLLS) are the stewards of the island. Their staff run the Porphyry Island Docks, facilites, and initiatives, including the Artist in Residence and Volunteer Hostkeeper programs, as well as an annual festival.
The public can access the lighthouse tower and the many structures on the island, including an 8 person, woodburning sauna and the lighthouse keeper’s residence. In 2024, the steward of the island, Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior, obtained an electric people mover to help those with mobility issues move around the island and see all of the sites.
