Enjoy the Canadian Shield’s scenery on this 555-614 km (344-380 miles) motorcycle route from Thunder Bay. You will ride west on Highway 17 and visit the 40-meter Kakabeka Falls. Then you will head to Kenora, where you can admire Husky the Muskie and Lake of the Woods. You will then take Highway 71 south and pass through Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, until you reach Highway 11. You will turn left and cruise through Fort Frances, and loop back to Thunder Bay via Highway 11/17.

This motorcycle tour will bring riders Thunder Bay, Kakabeka, Ignace, Dryden, Vermillion Bay, Kenora, looping down to Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, Fort Frances, Atikokan and back to Thunder Bay. Each community offers its very own unique aspects to the ride and different businesses and experiences to explore.
Tips:
While the route takes you through each community, it is worth while to travel off the main route and visit other great attractions in the area. There are also several restaurants to visit for a quick bite before carrying on.

Ride Start: Thunder Bay
Using Thunder Bay as your starting point, you will leave the city going west on Highway 17 (TransCanada) and up to your first stop, the stunning sight of Kakabeka Falls. This is the perfect place to stop and stretch your legs before continuing down the open road and onto the rest of your route.
Suggested Stop: Kakabeka Falls
Known as the “Niagara of the North”, Kakabeka Falls drops 40 metres over rock cliffs and contains some of the oldest fossils in the world. Check out the view from platforms and trails along the gorge or trace voyageur routes around the falls in this history-rich park.
Point of Interest: Ignace
From Kakabeka, you continue your journey up Highway 17 for 217 kms (135 miles) to the Township of Ignace. This area has many lakes, rivers, and forested land. Take this opportunity to fill your tank and take in the sites.
Point on Interest: Dryden
From Ignace to Dryden, this stretch of approximately 108 km (67 miles) along Highway 17 offers a scenic ride through the heart of the Canadian Shield, with towering pines and shimmering lakes lining the route. Upon reaching Dryden, explore its local charm and take in the serene views of Wabigoon Lake. It’s the perfect spot to refuel and enjoy a slice of Northwestern Ontario’s small-town hospitality.
Suggested Stop: Max the Moose
Max the Moose, a 5.6-meter (18-foot) tall statue, is a must-see landmark in Dryden, celebrating the area’s rich wildlife and outdoor culture. Located just off Highway 17, near the Dryden Visitor Information Centre, Max is easy to spot and makes for a great photo opportunity. Stop by to stretch your legs, learn about the region, and enjoy the scenic surroundings of Wabigoon Lake.

Bigfoot, a towering wooden statue in Vermilion Bay, is a quirky roadside attraction celebrating the area’s love for legends and nature. To find it, drive about 37 km (23 miles) west of Dryden on Highway 17. Located near the local tourist information center, it’s a fun spot to snap a photo and explore the area’s charm before continuing your journey.
Point of Interest: City of Kenora
Kenora is a picturesque town on the shores of Lake of the Woods. It is about 122 km (76 miles) west of Vermilion Bay via Highway 17. As you cruise into town, you’ll be greeted by beautiful waterfront views. Kenora is a perfect stop to stretch your legs, explore the charming streets, and enjoy the relaxed vibe of this lakeside town.
Suggested Stop: Husky the Muskie
Husky the Muskie is an iconic 12-meter (40-foot) statue located in Kenora, right along the shores of Lake of the Woods. This giant muskie celebrates the region’s excellent fishing opportunities. Situated in Husky Park, just off Highway 17, it’s an unmissable landmark.

Take Highway 17 West and then head south on Highway 71 for about 76 km (47 miles) to Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls. Ride End: Thunder Bay
From Little Falls Scenic Lookout, head east on Highway 11/17 toward Thunder Bay, a 115 km (71-mile) journey. The ride offers a scenic route through forests and along lakes, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the vast natural beauty of Northwestern Ontario. It’s a relaxing ride back to Thunder Bay, where you can wrap up your adventure through the region.
