Kakabeka Falls Trail is a 4 kilometre (2.5 mile) multi-use trail that extends the City of Thunder Bay’s Trans Canada Trail westward from Fort William Historical Park into Oliver-Paipoonge Township. Registered as part of the Trans Canada Trail network, the trail is signed and open, providing a mostly off-road route through forested areas along the north easement of Broadway Avenue and Whitewater Drive, including the Hogarth Plantation Loop. This section of trail is well suited for hiking, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing, with potential for bikepacking for experienced users. GPS downloads, maps, and additional trail information are available through NWORTA to support safe and informed trip planning.
Looking ahead, Kakabeka Falls Trail plays an important role in a broader regional vision to expand westward toward Kakabeka Falls and connect with the Shabaqua Trail. Ongoing discussions with Oliver-Paipoonge Township are helping advance plans to complete these missing links, forming part of a long-term goal to connect Thunder Bay with Atikokan and Minnesota through a continuous Trans Canada Trail corridor.
